Murray brings over 30 years of experience in financial, corporate, project development, mergers and acquisitions, and operational experience to the role, working across Australia, Africa, Asia Pacific and North American.

Most recently, Murray was the chief executive officer and managing director of Gold Road, leading the company’s transition from a small market capitalisation explorer to large-scale gold producer.

He is also a non-executive director at Black Rock Mining and not-for-profit organisation Miners Promise, as well as serving as non-executive chair of Jupiter Mines.

Murray said he is looking forward to joining Arafura’s board and working across its Nolans rare earth project in the Northern Territory.

“The Nolans project is a strategically important rare earths project for Australia that will deliver a globally diversified NdPr supply chain,” Murray said.

“I am pleased to be joining a future facing industry that will deliver the rare earths essential for electric vehicles and wind turbines as we transition to a lower carbon future.”

Arafura chair Mark Southey said Murray’s appointment ends an extensive search for a new director.

“The skills, experience and capabilities that [Murray] brings are strongly aligned to support Arafura’s growth trajectory,” Southey said.

“Ian will replace retired director Chirs Tonkin as chair of the Audit Committee and will serve to strengthen the financial skill base of the board as Arafura heads into the next stages of development.

“On behalf of the board, I look forward to Ian’s commencement as a non-executive director.”
