Heron Resources has awarded the road and rail logistics services contract for its Woodlawn zinc-copper project in New South Wales to local supplier Crawfords Freightlines.
Zinc, copper and lead mineral concentrates are to be exported via Port Kembla and Port Botany by the privately owned, Newcastle-based company once commissioning starts at Woodlawn in the fourth quarter of 2018.
Heron’s original plan was to move its haulage containers by road but will now utilise both road and a rail yard in Goulburn about 50km from the mine site. The switch in plans to a road-to-rail system is expected to bring local employment opportunities and eliminate truck movements through Goulburn while also reducing up to 6,000 annual road movements between the town and export ports.
Heron managing director Wayne Taylor said that the company was “pleased to have arrived at a safe and efficient solution for the transport of mineral concentrates, which also offers tangible benefits to the local communities around Woodlawn”.
The fleet for Woodlawn will comprise of a small fleet of semi-trailers to move containers between the mine site and Goulburn and and then transfer containers to rail services running between Goulburn and Port Kembla and Port Botany.
