Mining News Pro - Lucapa Diamond Company has recovered a 64-carat D coloured diamond from the Mothae kimberlite mine.
According to Mining News Pro - The 64-carat Type IIa rock is the 12th 50-plus carat diamond unearthed at Mothae since commercial production began in January last year.
Other significant recoveries from the southern African mine include an extremely rare 0.3 carat blue gem.
It proves that Mothae also hosts rare Type IIb diamonds, which account for less than 0.1 per cent of production globally.
“(This) further underlines Mothae’s status as a source of large and premium-value diamonds,” Lucapa Diamond Company stated in an ASX announcement.
The Mothae kimberlite mine produced 30,000 carats of precious gems during its first year of production, a figure which included three 100-plus carat diamonds.
Lucapa has also celebrated positive results from its other African diamond mine, the Lulo alluvial mine in Angola.
Lulo is one of the highest US dollar per carat alluvial diamond producers in the world, having produced 14 100-plus carat diamonds to date.
